If you want to learn French, but you don't have access to
a school nearby, or a language class, if you're house-bound,
or if you don't want to leave the comforts of your home while
studying, whatever your reasons, thanks to modern technology,
you now have plenty of viable options to choose from. Want to
learn French at home? You can easily make that a reality.
First, let's look at some of the more traditional options
open to you, if you want to learn French at home.
There are plenty of language courses out there nowadays that
ocus on the home language learner. Of note are the Teach Yourself
series, by Hodder/McGraw Hill, the Ultimate series by Living
Language, Linguaphone and the lesser known, but excellent BBC
courses, to name but a few.
If you are going to go about learning French on your own,
at home, I highly recommend getting hold of the audio component
for each course, at the very least. If a video component is offered,
you may also fnd that useful too.
If money permits, you could also go about hiring a teacher
to come to you and teach you French in your own home. Of course,
this can come with a huge price-tag over the course of a series
of lessons, and is probablyout of reach of most people. However,
allow me to let you in on a little secret: You can learn just
as effectively without a teacher, if you apply yourself to the
learning task in the right way.
Now let's look at the options that has become available to
us over the last decade is that of CALL, which stands for comuputer
assisited language learning. Computers have already changed the
way we learn languages, because they are interactive in a way
that ordinary courses could never be. The whole experience, if
you have a course of sufficient quality, is the closest thing
to learning a language with native speakers to guide you every
step of the way.
So, there are two computer-based options avaialble to us.
(1) Investing in a computer program and
(2) Internet based learning.
Where you go with this will depend on how much French you
want to learn. If you are serious about learning French to a
high level, you might want to invest in a good computer learning
program (watch out though: some computer language prograns are
little more than gimmicks, and are not really suited to the serious
learner).
If you wish to learn French at home, you are advised to invest
in a good language program instead of trying to scrape together
what you need from the various free Internet resources.
